Man.. Aoki is just too good with his submissions

I would love to see Aoki face BJ Penn. Penn is like Hansen standing w/ Aoki’s submission prowess.

r u fuct ? Penn would knock the fuck out of Aoki

I only bring it up because Aoki has called out BJ Penn before. Dream lightweight champ vs. UFC lightweight champ

Penn is nowhere near as slick with subs as Aoki is, stop kidding yourself. I think Penn’s defensive Jits is good enough to stop Aoki’s sub attempts and his standup would level Aoki but Penn’s offensive Jits is nowhere near as good as Aoki’s.

after what happened to Damien Maia against Marquart I’ve lost hope in these “jitz only” guys. Maia has better subs than Aoki but it dont mean nothing when a haymaker comes in your face.

I think its odd that anyone thinks Penn would destroy Aoki… i see things going the opposite way, I can’t see Penn dealing with Aoki’s ground at all…

for me sometimes the arena changes everything.. Octagon is way better than a ring.. and most ring fighters sucks at octagon.. thats why theres so many good takedown defense fighters at UFC

As far as “pure” Jits Maia is better than Aoki but as far as how both of their ground games translate to MMA I think Aoki is the better, slicker submissionist. What sets Aoki’s subs apart from anyone elses is how slick he is and how good he is at baiting people into doing what he wants then planting on the sub.
Kind of like how Fedor is very slick with his submissions, they just kind of come out of left field so you’re not ready for them and as soon as you realize what’s going on it’s usually too late.
IMO MMA should be fought on a huge mat like in grappling tournaments. The sport should be about the “Art” and should not have hinderences such a Cage, a Ring or those slippery logos the UFC uses (because they don’t get their sponsors far enough in advance to sew the logos into the mat) which have absolutely nothing to do with the actual art of fighting. The Cage was only designed in the first place to have a visual appeal since it was a brand new sport unlike anything. Now it invites boring lnp wrestlers and cage stalling as well as the hinderence of someone being able to pin your head against the cage and rain down strikes. A mat would eliminate the hinderences and would allow for much better viewing for the people who are watching it live at the venue because the Ring and Cage obstruct your view.

A mat may be an ideal platform as far as the “art of fighting” goes, but the cage really does play into strategy and style which IMO is a good thing. In any case I think it’s clear that MMA belongs in a cage rather than a ring. No more resets, ppl falling out of the ring, getting tangled up in ropes, etc. Rings are great for boxing, but when it comes to gnp/takedowns the ring sucks.
As far as Aoki vs. Penn I don’t think either man has a great advantage. Both are slick on the ground, BJs boxing is surely better, but Aoki’s ground game… I don’t know if BJ could handle that.

I agree with you Baz on Penn’s boxing being far superior to Aoki’s standup, but I’m not sure how much it really matters… I can’t see Penn knocking out Aoki in just a punch or two, and Aoki has a strange way of taking a few hits and ALWAYS landing on top… Thats where I think he’d end it without much trouble…
I’m trying to be unbiased, but I’m not sure if I’m succeeding… I have to admit that I don’t like Penn’s personality, and I hate to say it but maybe I’m just being hopeful with my prediction…

this is why i hate Dream an Aoki. dont get me wrong Aoki is good an could kick my ass but when it comes to MMA if he came over here to the states an fought in the UFC or even strikeforce for that matter he would get destroyed just like what MZRBLZ said u cant just have a ground game and be a mma fighter and thats why i hate DREAM and Aoki bc of first the bullshit calls that happened in the fight. u gotta watch the whole fight to see what im talking bout he can act like hes getting hit in the back of the head and since hes fighting in DREAM and hes the crowd favorite there gonna give him time to rest. even in this clip u can clearly tell he was rocked but made up some bullshit and ofcourse had time to recover. ridiculous, tell me im wrong but if u go back to any of his fights were hes fighting a striker and hes does this same “game” or what i like to call, being a pussy.

@bishplace I believe that what you said is totally true. and just to go with the same as Baz about strategy i would REALLY love to see an hybrid between ring and cage.. maybe half part of the “mat” could be a cage-like-wall and the other as a ring.. so if you were better at grappling or stang up, you would always be looking for the center of the mat or the ring part, and if you are a better wrestler you go pushing for the cage side.. it would make it ” As Real As it gets” dont you think? i mean it wouldnt play unfair for any side or art.. it would be about the figther being able to bring up the best of the place for your technique.. just as in a street fight a bigger guy would look for a wall or “car” to push you against and g’n'p you, and a faster stand up fighter would look for teh spaces
well thats my oppinion

I saw Aoki get knocked out a couple fights ago with pretty much one punch and yes, BJ definitely could land a solid knee or a combo that would absolutely destroy the tiny man from Japan. JoshJ, I hear you man, I hate everything about BJ’s personality too, I lost quite a bit of money betting against him over the years but you have to be realistic… no way I can see Penn ever get submitted by anyone, anywhere… and thats Aokis only way to win, he would get laced in the face so fast and get dropped not just by Penn, but by 3/4 of the UFC LW dicision. I’d wanna see Damien Maia vs Aoki in a pure grappling contest if they could somehow get to a closer weight… not sure if that even matters in grappling competitions tho.
