Well, I would have to say Cung, and Frank are pretty even in the stand up. Cung just kept landing kicks, but in the latter minutes of the 3rd round Cung was really close to getting finished. When Cung is getting hit he just freezes up, and he can't fight back, and he cannot take a hit quite like Frank can, and I wouldn't say he was trying to get a takedown either. He was probably just trying to hold him against the cage, or even clinch him.

Also, before anyone says I'm accusing Shamrock of jobbing the fight, I'm not. It was a legitimate bout within the confines of a stand-up exhibition, and it's too bad Frank had to endure a broken arm for his trouble. I'm only saying that there were numerous opportunities for Frank to exploit Le's weaknesses, which as a seasoned veteran we've all seen him do many times, and he didn't do it (seemingly avoided it, actually)...and that begs serious questions far bigger than ACL difficulties. Frank Shamrock with a bad ACL is still more capable than many, and that doesn't come anywhere close to explaining the curiously one-dimensional tone of this fight.

Dude. No disrespect to Cung Le (he is a great fighter and is becoming a good MMA fighter), but this was a total script-job.
The entire fight was tailored to Le's strengths, and his weaknesses were completely avoided. I won't go as far as the poster that compared it to WWE, but it might as well have been a WCL match.

Major distinction to be made: it was an entertaining stand-up exhibition, but NOT a good MMA fight. There were numerous things Frank could and should have done and didn't (and he knew he wasn't doing them). He takes Le's back and lets him go, charges in for a guillotine and lets him go, Le sweeps the leg and sends Frank to the ground but doesn't pursue...and then there's all the taunting and buddy-buddy "touche"-ing...a scripted stage-show payday tailored to a Cung Le win.

I don't buy the "prove a point" ploy from Shamrock, either. If you're not fighting to WIN, and thus executing your strengths, then you're fighting for some other reason...in this case, obviously a fat paycheck. Stepping into the cage and purposely limiting yourself to "prove a point" is stupidity, and it's not something a veteran like Shamrock would do with any seriousness. It's a cover story to try and legitimize this exhibition and put on an entertaining show so Strikeforce can crown their new rising star, because every organization outside the UFC is struggling to vet bankable talent. Affliction is trying to do it by throwing anyone they can at Fedor, and we all saw what happened when EliteXC tried it. I am sorry to say so, but in terms of integrity of the sport, the way this fight was conducted was the moral equivalent to Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson.
It was legitimate on paper, but not in practice.

With regards to the integrity of MMA, this is why - by and large - you do not see this kind of thing in the UFC (save the recent publicity stunt featuring Brock Lesnar, which was a blatant attempt to draw viewers from another target demo; an equally as scripted move, but the fights themselves were not "tailored" the way this one was) and why the UFC is still the premiere MMA organization. I don't like a lot of what I hear out of Dana White's mouth, nor do I agree with everything he and Zuffa do, but I do know he would not put on a match like this. If he's guilty of anything, it's from sins of omission - not doing everything possible to legitimize the heavyweight division by landing Fedor and truly bringing the best fighters together, and allowing ego to dictate business. That's when such stunts become necessary.

I didn't intend this as a pro-UFC rant, but seeing fights like this one begs real MMA fans to see through the hype of promotion and discern where - for the MOST part - the most legitimate MMA fights are taking place. I'll note here that I was a K-1 student before I was a UFC fan, so the evolution from that venue is not lost on me, but it is silly and pointless to bicker about such organizations with respect to MMA. The entire sport is on an accelerated learning curve and is rapidly eclipsing more specialized disciplines, and therefore those disciplines can no longer be grounds for adequate and accurate comparisons (and no, PK, I won't do an inverted rectal slide down a telephone pole, you arrogant, verbally-abusive fuckity-fuck-fuck-fuck...you have some valid points, but that's no reason to be a cock-nazi about it).

Anyway, again...no disrespect intended toward Le or Shamrock. They are both great fighters, but in this case, they were slaves to a promotional mandate.

As great as this fight was, I can't help but feel Shamrock was completely in the dark as to how to take on Le.

As for taking it to the ground, it only takes knowledge of one submission move to pull it off. Much like Shamrock was looking for that one punch to decide the fight. Le dominated him in his own way. Thing is, Anderson Silva is far more agile and a lot faster than Shamrock is. And he can lay a guy flat on his back countering with a knee easily.

There's no way to predict a fight like this, especially in the UFC, where leisure1 makes a good point. The pressure is a lot higher which may or may not influence Le's performance.

All in all, all of you saying xxx WILL beat xxx are full of shit.

Nothing against UFC but the only reason that ufc is so big is that they have a billionaire owner, when you have that you can get some of the better fighters. The only thing I keep thinking is that le is still up and coming, and training everyday. We will need to set back and see if he can be as good at the ground game as he is with his stand up in time.
You can't say that you don't like seeing those amazing kicks!?

overall i think it was a great fight. i've always been a fan of cung's precise striking however i expected more of him he almost got beaten and i think if frank would've taken him to the ground he might have gotten the victory. oh and as far him going to the ufc he would dominate it but would lose to anderson silva. he would probably get beaten by nate marquat and rich fanklin to.

You dam dummys only reason why Cung Le won was becasue Shamrock kept to his word and did not try and take him down!!! If Shamrock shooted and took him down, this fight would have been over in round 1

Give me a fucking break you guys. You all make it sound as if you're close personal friends with Le and Silva. Who knows who would win. Everyone thought Crocop would dominate the UFC and he got his ass handed to him. The UFC is a totally different ballgame. The skill level is pretty much the same as most other organizations but the pressure to perform is a 1000 times higher. Silva is there and Le is not. The edge has to go to Silva. As for Fedor I don't blame Dana White for not setting a match with Couture right of the bat. Lets see Fedor kick some ass first and then set the match. That's way more interesting and you never know, Fedor might lose to an unknown fighter. I love watching the guy fight but he's due for a loss and it would most likely happen in the UFC.

K1 was THE place every fighter wanted to go to when the UFC was still in its infant stages. Thats where he's still undefeated. He also used to fight in the IKF, the Largest Kickboxing Sanctioning Body in the World and is where he still has his undefeated world title. One of MANY. Just because the only organisation YOU have only heard of is the UFC, it doesn't make the organisations "much lesser"
Get your facts straight fucknut and come back with a better comeback and not just a repeat of what I called you.

And just to make it clear everyone, i reckon the UFC is great. But it does not have all of the best fighters in their ranks. Dana white, the dumb fuck makes sure of that by insulting great fighters like fedor emelianenko. And yes, I think Silva could be one of the best for sure. He's young, precise and has lethal knees. Can Cung match up to him? Well, he is 35years old but still looks as fit as a 22 year old. And he also has precise lethal moves up his sleeve. I guess it's just a fight we have to sit back and hope will come to fruition.

And one more thing, Kidrockya, you're still a retarded muppet with an oversized carrot up your arse, so high up it touches your pea sized brain and disables your capacity(if you had any to begin with) to come up with an original comeback.

Yes PK. If you havent noticed, UFC is the top organization right now. Le isnt in it. Almost every UFC fighter is versed in submissions. As you said Cung doesnt know submissions well. You obviously dont know as much as you think, obvious since you know SO MUCH about lesser organizations LMAO Your a retard bigmouth

No disrespect to Cung but he has a long way to go. No disrespect to Msombody but Silva is a much better striker than Le. He's more accurate, much faster, and hits a lot harder. I've seen most of Le's fights and his sanshou bouts are impressive but a lot of mma fighters have won titles outside of mma. A belt doesn't count for much.

Re-match??? Ha! Don't make me laugh. Shamrock was no match for Cung Le. He was dominated for every second of every round. The only highlight for him was when he landed that one stray shot on Le's chin. And yes, he did try to take Le down. Except, guess what? Le got out of it with ease. Le is a phenomenal wrestler, much better than Frank. He just doesn't know alot of the submissions yet. That's why he didn't want to go down to Frank(a submission specialist) even when Shamrock waved him down to join him.
Kidrockya, are u kidding me? He hasn't beaten the top fighters? You don't happen to have an extra chromosome do u? Cung has 4 world title belts now and he has yet to card a single loss for his sanshou or mma. Only someone totally retarded or doesn't know a thing about Cung Le would say some stupid shit like that.

Ryo was a long time ago & I think today Silva would win easily. I also have to say, Silva has fought & beaten all the top fighters, something Cung has yet to do

Great fight! I agree, Shamrock should have attempted more take downs. Shamrocks downfall was his arrogance and ignorance in regards to fighting Cung in a stand up fight. I also would like to disagree with the assumption that Anderson Silva would destroy Cung. Silva is great fighter, versatile, quick, good hands, good feet, knees, and BJJ at an expert level. I think this is an even match. Le is 3 time world San Shou champion with a standing game that is rivaled by none, legs are like baseball bats, great hands - his kick punch combos are beautiful. If you haven't seen a Cung Le San Shou fight, do it - his throws and flying scissor takedowns are amazing. Apparently he is also a great wrestler, and has and is training BJJ. Over all I think Cung has an advantage on his feet, but the question is could he neutralize a Silva takedown. On the ground Silva has the advantage. I like both fighters, lets hope it happens (in or out of the UFC).
Ok, now this is a stretch, but I think it's funny. Cung Le beat Frank Shamrock, who beat Phil Baroni, who beat Ryo Chonan, who beat Anderson Silva... So by that you could deduce Le could beat Silva : )

What was Shamrock thinking? After the first round you would think a strategy change would be in order. I guess he enjoyed taking multiple kicks to the arm until it broke. Great game plan Frank. Maybe retirement is in order. Kidrockya is right Li's biggest competition is in the UFC and he wouldn't last 1 round with Silva. Or Franklin for that matter. "Frog my anus"? wrong website Mack.

It was a good fight. Im happy to see Shamrock is starting to have a bit of respect for others in the ring. I have never seen him that respectful to anyone. Cung proved himself well. I still wonder why Frank didnt try harder to take him down. I believe he had a stiking issue to prove & didnt play that one smart. A rematch will definitely be in order. I dont think Cung has ever been tested that hard before either. I think Cung will find his biggest tests in the UFC. Anderson Silva comes to mind. I dont think Cung will be able to handle Anderson for long, a stiker equally as good with more reach & a better ground game. I dont know if we will ever see that(weight class matchup). Frank isnt the top guy in his class as I see it. Hats off to both fighters though, they made the rest of the fight card look asleep. Honestly the other matchups were horrible & they need better announcers definitley.

He sustained a broken arm, this fight was AWESOME! These guys will have to do it again, that was too good to see just one time! If Shamrock would have not broken his arm, Le would have probably stopped him anyways, Le hurt him with that kick to the head in the final seconds of round three. It was good to see Le take some solid right hands, alot of fighters would have been KO'd by those rights Shamrock hit him with!

I'm not sure what injury Frank sustained to prevent him from answering the fourth round, but without a doubt, he is still bad ass and one of my all time favorite fighters. Congratulations Cung Le; you've earned it man!
